What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a unique system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structure and function of the body. In 1993 Osteopathy became the first major complementary healthcare profession to be accorded statutory recognition under the 1993 Osteopaths Act.

Osteopathy is based on the simple concept that if the structure of the body is in trouble the body itself cannot function properly. It is a way of assessing and treating damaged parts of the body in tissues such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints.

When the body is balanced and efficient, just like a well-tuned engine, it will function with the minimum degree of wear, stress and energy, thereby reducing pain and disability and leaving more energy for living.

For Whom is Osteopathy Suitable?

Osteopaths treat people of all ages and backgrounds. The techniques that the osteopath uses depend on the patient and the presenting condition. For example, the approach towards a 25-year-old rugby player will be very different to that for an 85-year-old arthritic pensioner or a pregnant woman.

Will Osteopathy Help Me?

Osteopaths look at the body to understand how it functions in order to discover what's going wrong, and the best way to fix it. Most people think of osteopaths as spinal specialists. However, although the spine is very important, the body is more than just a spine. 50% of people with back pain actually have mechanical problems affecting their spines, which originate in the arms, legs, head or internal organs.

Although osteopathy is best known for the treatment of back pain, many other conditions can be helped. Conditions that can be treated by osteopathy include:

  •   Back pain
  •   Neck pain
  •   Postural strain
  •   Whiplash injuries
  •   Disc injuries
  •   Sciatica
  •   Migraines and headaches
  •   Frozen and stiff shoulders
  •   Arm and leg pains
  •   Tennis elbow
  •   Repetitive Strain Injuries
  •   Hip and knee problems
  •   Ankle and foot problems
  •   Trapped nerves
  •   Strains and sprains
  •   Arthritic pain and stiffness
  •   Sports injuries
  •   Muscular strains
  •   Structural problems in pregnancy
  •   Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  •   Asthma
  •   Childhood problems

  • The Initial Consultation: What to Expect

The initial consultation with an osteopath includes taking a full medical case history, a thorough physical assessment and evaluation. This is then followed by treatment. Each treatment will be tailored to the individual patient and presenting problem, and will be re-assessed at each visit. The treatment may include soft-tissue techniques, cranial osteopathy and articulatory techniques to free the joints, acupuncture/dry needling, and/or spinal manipulation (often producing the 'click').

Patients have complete choice in treatment techniques applied. Once the treatment is over it is likely that some form of advice will be given and a rehabilitation programme may be advised. Further visits may be necessary but the practitioner will be able to advise on this after assessing the body's reaction to the first treatment.
